WHY SWEEP YOUR CHIMNEY?

1. It will help prevent chimney fires. Having your chimney swept will remove soot, tar and creosote, which at the right temperature has the potential to ignite. It is important to use a competent chimney sweep, who uses the correct equipment and sweeps/cleans the entire length of the flue. Doing this correctly dramatically reduces the risk of a chimney fire.
2. By having your chimney swept, you are ensuring the flue is clear so that all fire gases exit sufficiently reducing the chance of carbon monoxide entering your home. A competent chimney sweep will also check you have adequate ventilation and your chimney/flue is functioning correctly and safely. They will check you have a working carbon monoxide alarm in the correct place and will be able to provide you with both chimney and fire safety guidance and information.
3. Having your chimney swept will ensure there are no nests or blockages which could cause carbon dioxide to enter the room and/or prevent the chimney/flue functioning correctly.
4. Your chimney sweep will be able to advise you on any repairs needed or any issues with draw or the function of your stove or open fire.
5. They will be able to provide you with a certificate and/or receipt, as some insurance companies require proof that the chimney has been swept by a competent chimney sweep.

Sweeping

The cost of a chimney sweep can vary massively as all chimneys and installations are very different. When giving a quote over the phone it is often difficult to quantify the work that will be required and the time it will take. If it is necessary to spend more time than normal cleaning a chimney due to large amounts of soot or potential blockages, additional costs may need to be charged. I offer a very honest, fair and transparent service. I use the latest equipment, have excellent PPE and work in a very clean and methodical way. I issue electronic certificates of compliance (paper based are available). I can accept cash, bacs or cheque on completion of the job and offer reminder services. I aim to provide you with an excellent service, so that you will use me time and time again and recommend me to your friends and family. A straight forward job, will take between 45 – 60 minutes from start to finish.

As well as sweeping the flue, I will always check over the appliance and check it meets current building regs and is in safe working order, feeding back any damage or repairs required.

Cowls fitted

I fit a range of cowls, dependant on the fuel you burn, the chimney and your needs. The most common one I fit is the bird guard as seen in the pictures above. These are made of high grade stainless steel, guaranteed for 10 years, but will last much longer. They are designed to limit rain entry and keep/birds vermin out. Providing I can access your roof with my ladders, it costs on average £165 to supply and fit. I am also able to provide a variety of other cowls dependant on your needs, please get in touch to discuss and get a price.

New Home Inspection

Have you just moved into a new home? Do you have an open fire or wood burning stove with no record of installation or history?
We can offer a safety inspection which is more in depth than a standard sweep/service. As well as the normal clean and safety checks, we will carry out an internal cctv check, climb into the loft and check the chimney, check the chimney externally across all floors. Providing any feedback and advice required. The cost of this starts from £125

out of reach.jpg

Out of Reach

G Lucas Chimney Sweep carry a variety of ladders due to the nature of our work.  Over the years we have been asked by customers to carry out various tasks, such as aerial removal, unblocking gutters, replacing tiles, re pointing, painting fascia boards and other tasks which are "Out of Reach". We have now decided to offer this an additional service. So if you have a job that requires the use of ladders, please get in touch for a free quote. Please remember that ladder work will only be carried out if it safe to do so. Some jobs simply require scaffolding or a cherry picker. Please note, we dont clean windows.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

On average it takes about an hour. If it has not been swept for a long time it can take longer as there will be more deposits to remove. Once you become a regular customer and I am familiar with the appliance/fire place it can be a little quicker too.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE YOU ARRIVE?

Ideally the fire should have not been used for 24hrs, although during cold months if this is your only form of heating then 12 hrs should be ok. It needs to be cold/safe enough for me to work and not damage my equipment. Any items on or near the fire/hearth should be removed if possible and allow clear access to the hearth.

WILL YOU MAKE A MESS?

Absolutely not! I use various methods to seal the opening to prevent any deposits entering the room. I use a triple filtered hoover and take pride in keeping myself and your property tidy.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE SOOT?

Whilst the soot is on your property it is classed as domestic waste, as soon as I remove it from your property it becomes commercial waste. Therefore I ask to leave it in your wheelie bin. It is all sealed up and won’t make a mess. You may even want to put it on the garden!

HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE CHIMNEY?

I use the latest in rotary power sweeping technology from Snaplok UK http://www.rotarypowersweeping.co.uk/. High quality flexible and rigid rods are driven by a drill and the suitable head/whip line/brush rotates providing a more efficient clean than traditional rods and brush’s. I also use manual sweeping equipment when it is required, as some older more delicate flues would not like being rotary swept. I carry rods and brushes for every occasion!
